Preventive Dentistry FAQ

At Bonnie View Dental, we always want our patients to feel as comfortable as possible when they visit us for preventive care or any other dental service. Below are some of the most common questions asked by our preventive care patients, to take the guesswork out of your next visit.

How long does a cleaning appointment take?

We recommend reserving approximately 90 minutes for your first visit with us at Bonnie View Dental. After that, each dental cleaning should take about 30-60 minutes, depending on the state of your oral health.

During your cleaning appointment, our dentists will examine your teeth, remove tartar and plaque, and gently polish the teeth. We'll perform a professional brushing and flossing, then seal our work with a strengthening mineral paste. Additional time may be required to take x-rays, address cavities, or examine any other oral health concerns.

Should I brush and floss before my appointment?

Our team recommends a quick brushing with a soft-bristled toothbrush before you arrive for your visit, so we can more quickly assess the state of your smile, including checking for cavities, inflammation, or other oral health concerns. Brushing your teeth beforehand will allow us a clearer view for your professional teeth cleaning and exam.

During your preventive appointment, our dental team will perform a professional flossing to check for tender areas or any gum health concerns. It is not necessary to floss before you arrive for your appointment. Patients who are concerned about gum soreness or who haven't flossed in awhile may ramp up their daily flossing habits in the days leading up to their visit. Either way, our team will perform your professional flossing with as much gentle care as possible, and take time to discuss your unique oral health needs, including an oral hygiene routine that works best for you!

How often should I visit my dentist for a cleaning or check-up exam?

At Bonnie View Dental, we recommend scheduling dental cleanings at least twice per year to keep your smile healthy and address any oral health concerns as early as possible. If your unique oral health situation requires more frequent visits, our team will help you determine the best appointment schedule for your healthiest smile.

How can I keep my teeth in the best shape?

To maintain your healthiest smile between dentist appointments, we recommend the following oral hygiene tips:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush
  • Floss daily to keep dental plaque at bay
  • Replace your toothbrush or toothbrush head every 3-4 months to maintain its optimal function
  • Limit tobacco products and high-sugar foods and drinks
  • Visit your dentist for your regularly scheduled check-up exams
